Outdoor Business Signs That Survive a Highveld Summer
Most outdoor business signs in Johannesburg are specified as if they were going indoors. Then the first October hailstorm arrives, the colour starts drifting after eighteen months of highveld sun, and the fixings rust out from the bottom edge. The sign itself is rarely the thing that failed. This is what actually goes wrong on Gauteng buildings, and what to ask for so it does not happen twice.

What counts as an outdoor business sign?
An outdoor business sign is any permanent exterior sign that identifies your premises or directs people to it, which in practice means fascia boards above a shopfront, building signs mounted on a wall or parapet, freestanding pylon and entrance signs, and directional boards across a site. They share one thing: full exposure, all year, with nobody looking at them until something goes wrong.
That last part matters more than it sounds. Interior signage gets noticed the moment it looks tired, because staff walk past it daily. A sign four metres up on a north-facing wall fades slowly enough that the people who see it every morning stop registering the change. Customers arriving for the first time don’t have that blind spot.
So the specification conversation for an exterior sign is a different conversation. It’s less about what looks good on the artwork proof and more about what the building and the weather will do to it.
What actually destroys outdoor signs in Gauteng?
Three things do nearly all the damage on the highveld: ultraviolet light, hail, and water getting into the edges and fixings. They attack in that order of frequency and roughly the reverse order of speed.
Johannesburg sits at about 1,750 metres above sea level. Thinner atmosphere means less filtering, so a sign here takes harder ultraviolet exposure than the same sign in Durban. Ultraviolet is what fades printed colour and makes unlaminated vinyl go brittle and chalky. Reds and deep blues shift first, which is inconvenient if either one is your brand colour.
Hail is the blunt one. Gauteng’s storm season runs roughly October through March, and the South African Weather Service issues severe thunderstorm warnings across the province through most of it. Hail dents lightweight substrates, cracks unsupported acrylic faces, and punches straight through corrugated plastic that was only ever meant for short-term use.
Water is the slow one. It gets into an unsealed edge or an unsealed fixing hole, sits there, and works on the substrate from the inside. Most of the exterior signs that get replaced early did not fail across the face. They failed at an edge or a bracket while the middle was still perfectly good.
Does the direction a sign faces really matter?
Yes, and in the southern hemisphere it works the opposite way round to what most artwork briefs assume. North-facing signs in South Africa take the most direct sun through the day, so they fade fastest. A south-facing sign on the same building, printed on the same material with the same ink, can hold its colour noticeably longer.
Here’s the thing: that’s worth raising before fabrication, not after. If your main identification sign faces north and sits in full sun from nine in the morning, it is a candidate for a ultraviolet-rated laminate even when the budget version would have been fine on the shaded elevation. Two signs on one building do not always need the same specification.
West-facing signs get the harshest part of the afternoon, which combines heat with direct light. On a large panel that also means more thermal movement, so the fixing method has to allow for it.
Specifying a sign that lasts
Get the substrate, the print finish, and the fixings right, and an exterior sign becomes a ten-year asset instead of a three-year running cost. Those are three separate decisions, and people usually only make the first one.
- Substrate. Match it to the exposure and the intended life. Our signage page sets out where Chromadek, aluminium composite and Correx each belong, so it’s worth reading that before you commit to a board.
- Print and finish. Ultraviolet-rated inks and an overlaminate are the difference between colour that holds and colour that drifts. On a highveld north elevation this is not an upgrade, it is the baseline.
- Edges and fixings. Sealed edges, corrosion-resistant fixings, and a mounting method that lets a large panel expand and contract without stressing the fixing points.
- Access. How the sign gets installed, and how it gets cleaned or refaced later. A sign that needs a cherry picker every time is a sign with a permanent maintenance cost attached.
If you are weighing up options for a specific building, it’s quicker to send us the elevation and get a quote than to guess at specification from a catalogue. We come back on quotes within 24 hours.
Approval: check before you fabricate, not after
Outdoor advertising signage is regulated by municipal by-law in South Africa, and the rules differ by council and by sign type. Larger signs, illuminated signs, projecting signs and freestanding pylons are the ones most likely to need approval before they go up. The City of Johannesburg publishes its outdoor advertising requirements, and neighbouring metros run their own.
If your premises sit in a managed business park or shopping centre, there’s a second layer. The lease normally carries a signage specification covering permitted size, position on the fascia and whether illumination is allowed. Request that spec from centre management before artwork starts. Signs that get made and then fail the centre’s rules are a common and entirely avoidable expense.

How long should an outdoor sign actually last?
A properly specified exterior sign should give you somewhere between five and ten years of service before it needs refacing, though honestly that depends almost entirely on exposure, orientation and finish. A laminated, ultraviolet-rated print on a steel-faced board on a sheltered elevation sits at the top of that range. An unlaminated print on a light substrate facing north sits well below the bottom of it.
Two things usually fail at different rates, which is the part worth planning for. The board can be structurally sound while the graphics have visibly aged. When that happens you are often refacing rather than replacing, because the frame and the fixings are still doing their job.
Budget for a reface, not a rebuild. It’s the cheaper cycle, and it keeps the brand looking current.
Frequently asked questions
What does an outdoor business sign cost?
Cost is driven by size, substrate, whether the sign is illuminated, how it is fixed, and how hard the installation position is to reach. Illumination and difficult access move the number more than most people expect, and a large single panel is not simply twice the price of a small one. We quote per project rather than off a price list, and quotes come back within 24 hours.
Can you print signs for more than one branch?
Yes. Multi-site rollouts are straightforward to keep consistent because the artwork, colour build and substrate get specified once and then repeated, which is exactly what keeps branches looking like the same brand. If you are also standardising printed items across sites, our corporate printing services cover the rest of it.
Can an existing sign be refaced instead of replaced?
Often, yes. If the frame and fixings are sound and only the printed face has aged, refacing keeps the structure and replaces the graphics. That said, it’s worth having someone look at the fixings before committing either way, because a sound-looking sign with corroded brackets is a different job.
Do you handle installation?
Tell us the site and the mounting position when you request a quote and we will scope it with the sign. Access height and surface type both change the method, so the sooner that is known the more accurate the quote.
PLANNING A SIGN FOR A GAUTENG SITE?
Tell us the elevation, the size and whether it needs to be lit, and we will spec it for highveld conditions.
