Which binding should you choose?
Saddle stitching suits documents up to about 64 pages, perfect binding gives thicker books a square printed spine, and hardcover is the premium option for books meant to last years. Wire binding is the practical pick for manuals and cookbooks because the book lies flat while you work from it.
Thickness decides most of it. A 20 page brochure wants staples. A 300 page novel wants a glued spine, and if that book will be handled hard, ask us about PUR glue, a stronger adhesive that keeps pages in under heavy use. For the long history behind these methods, bookbinding is a craft that predates printing itself.
Printing a self-published book in South Africa
Self-publishing in South Africa needs three things before printing: a print-ready PDF, an ISBN, and a plan for your legal deposit copies. The ISBN is issued free by the National Library of South Africa. The Legal Deposit Act of 1997 then requires you to deposit copies of your published book: one copy to the Pretoria legal deposit library if your run is under a hundred copies, five copies to the designated libraries if it’s more.
Few printers mention that part. We’d rather you know before the boxes arrive, so plan those copies into your print run from the start.

How much does a 300 page book cost to print?
A 300 page book is perfect binding territory, and its price swings mostly on colour: black and white text on standard book paper costs a fraction of full colour throughout. Quantity does the rest of the work. Twenty copies for a family memoir and two thousand copies of a corporate history are very different prices per unit. Give us those two decisions and we’ll quote both options so you can compare.
